In May 2012 Arria NLG acquired a minority interest in Big Data software company, Data2Text Limited, a spin-out from
the Computer Science Department of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Data2Text Limited has developed and
begun to commercialise software that uses Natural Language Generation (“NLG”), a subfield of artificial intelligence,
to analyse various forms of Big Data and produce natural language reports facilitating the monitoring and control of
operations within large enterprises.
NLG as a science has been in development for over 25 years. The Arria NLG Engine was devised, and has been developed,
by a team of academics at the University of Aberdeen, one of the world’s oldest universities and a pioneer in
computer science. This team has become recognised as global leaders in the science of NLG. We believe that the
Arria NLG Engine is one of the most advanced software systems ever developed. It replicates the way a
human mind analyses data. It also effectively replicates the way one mind communicates with another—via natural
language.
In 2009, the University of Aberdeen, its NLG Chief Scientists and others formed Data2Text Limited to develop and
commercialise their NLG technology advances. Data2Text Limited is now partially owned by Arria NLG, has been a
subsidiary of Arria NLG for financial reporting purposes since before 30 September 2012, and is currently operating
on a day-to-day basis as part of Arria NLG. Importantly, upon completion of Arria NLG’s acquisition of Data2Text Limited,
the shareholders in Data2Text Limited, including the University of Aberdeen and the leading academics who have developed the NLG technology, will become important Shareholders in Arria NLG.
Arria NLG Limited is positioning itself to lead IP developments in the NLG world through three
interdependent groups:
1. Academic Research Group
2. Commercial Research Group
3. Legal Integration Group
